We have touched on the act of sharing and how sharing our journey of weight loss can actually trip us in those moments of vulnerability.
May we propose another strategy?
It’s a fine line. When sharing goals, intent or struggle we often seek guidance, reassurance and support. When we seek these things from sources that don’t understand the program and commitments we are living and moving inside of, we often receive feedback that is outside of the spectrum of helpful and often detrimental to our course of action.
Example:
When you are close to goal and someone tells you that you’re doing so well with your weight loss that you deserve a [insert food or edible here].
We won’t spend much time on this but let’s take a moment to understand that no matter how well you succeed at anything, food is not a reward. Food is food and is sustenance and fuel for our amazing bodies. Period.
There are so many reasons and explanations for people’s reactions and advice. We could dig into that all day. What fun to speculate. However, that’s nothing but empty drama and no one has time for that. What we can do is explore a different way to share and contribute to others along our journey to health.
Try on that everyone has their own story about weight loss and health. It can often be seen as a threat when someone suggests something outside of their ideas and view. Try on that sharing your progress and success is still possible if you share it as an experience of your being.
Share how you’re feeling on a being level. What is your new outlook? What is working for you on the level of self care and mindfulness. Share the success of making choices and the power you feel inside of taking actions to further your commitments and goals.
These are all things that are relatable and inspiring without being threatening and overshadowing the view that may be held by another person. This opens the space of other people creating a new story about what you’re doing and leaving an opening for them to change their view. Certainly, there may be disagreement with how you are losing weight or your method of achieving health but who can argue with the joy of being in the space of creation and committed action?
The next time someone asks or comments about your healthy lifestyle or weight loss, slide laterally and speak to their core about the exuberance and sparkle of choosing you over any social construct that is pushed upon you.
Share you.
